This year, Tesco take the award for best festive advert to make us blubber! The beautiful advert honours tradition and loved ones lost in a way that speaks to how life rolls on.
Global (25 November 2024) – Grief is a subject we have touched on at times here at Good Things Guy. It’s part of the human experience, and yet it continues to perplex us every year when significant dates for loved ones lost, come around. Christmas is especially a tender time as it embodies family, unity and togetherness, reminding us all about the loved ones who are no longer with us.
Many families have traditions this time of year that we love to indulge in. Tesco, a supermarket in the United Kingdom, released its festive advert, and it had us blubbering!!! It touches on those tender feelings of loved ones lost, honours tradition, and makes us look inward at how we can better support our family during this time.
If you have lost a loved one and are dreading this time of year, you are not alone! In 2022, SADAG shared a useful guide to helping people who suffer from depression over the festive season, so if you are needing a bit of support, please do read more here and reach out!
But, back to the advert. It covers something we are all a little guilty of. Life is busy, and it’s easy to get caught up in the throws of it, forgetting that our grandparents and parents thrive on spending time with us. A little “bite” of nostalgia adds reminders of our family, and we see bits of it everywhere. The reminders are there for us to act on.
For the main character of the ad, it’s the bite of a gingersnap that reminds him, while he is busy getting ready for the holidays, to go and spend more time with his grandad, who is spending the holidays alone after the loss of their matriarch.
The advert hits home for so many people! So if you see little reminders about, pick up the phone and message or call your grandparents or parents. Even if you can’t be there for time together, the phone call will mean millions!
