Woodrock Animal Rescue founder Stella Meldau hopes to celebrate her birthday in March by sterilising 500 pets and feeding their families too!
Johannesburg, South Africa (17 February 2022) – Woodrock Animal Rescue was founded in 1992 by Nicholas and Stella, whose focus, passion and drive afforded their animal rescue vision to become a reality. They help, protect and care for thousands of animals each year
The Animal Rescue Centre originated in the suburban area of Woodmead and Khyber Rock, hence the name Woodrock, but they are now based on 8.5 hectares in the beautiful Hennops River Valley.
The organisation has worked hard to rehome as many dogs as possible. To do this, they give their rescues makeovers so they can put their best paws forward. The animal rescue has shared their latest group of hopeful pups on social media, and they are adorable.
Not only do they rehome dogs, but they also have a shelter for cats. You can see all their adoptees via the Facebook page here. There are some magnificent cats currently in their care.
For the month of March, they are hoping to sterilise 500 animals, and as a reward for bringing a pet in, they will be gifting the family a food pack made up of mealie meal, soup and beans. The pack will also include a pet food bag for either a cat or a dog. This is being done to hopefully curve the number of unwanted litters.
“Most domestic cats have life spans from 12 to 15 years. With an average of 5 kittens per litter and four sets of litter a year, a cat can give birth to up to 300 kittens in its lifetime. A dog can have three litters a year, with seven puppies per litter. That equates to 126 puppies in 6 years.”
“A single female dog and her babies can have over 67,000 puppies in six years. That is over 11,000 dogs that need safe, cruelty-free homes per year. It is impossible to find that many homes. That is why we must sterilise these animals before they can breed.”
To celebrate her birthday, Stella Meldau is raising the R300,000 needed to cover the costs of the sterilisation drive. Woodrock Animal Rescue will be working with three other animal welfare organisations to make sure they reach 500 animals from various areas in Johannesburg. These organisations include CLAW (Community Led Animal Welfare), Cause for Paws and Gideons Animal Outreach.
The organisation asks that if you wish to donate either animal food or human food, you reach out via their Facebook page here. Should you wish to contribute towards the sterilisations, you can donate via BackaBuddy here.
