The International Wine Challenge has given us several reasons to celebrate over the past week, this time celebrating the best South African white wine.

Somerset West, South Africa (12 June 2025) – It has been an incredible week of wine wins as we celebrate our third win in just a matter of days. This time, we get to raise our glasses to Vergelegen’s Estate White 2023, which earned the trophy for the best South African white wine in the International Wine Challenge.

The International Wine Challenge has unearthed some truly phenomenal wines, and many have been locally produced, meaning the South African flag has been flown on the international stage and solidified its name as a leading wine producer globally!

The winemakers are bringing home the trophy from the 2025 International Wine Challenge, which is one of the most rigorous and respected wine competitions worldwide.

For Vergelegen, the win just validates the incredible work being done by the team here in South Africa.

“We are extremely proud that our Estate White has won an IWC trophy, one of the highest honours in the global wine industry. This accolade is a powerful testament to the passion, knowledge, and relentless pursuit of excellence by our entire team, from vineyard to cellar.

“I extend my heartfelt congratulations and gratitude to our viticulturists, winemakers, and support staff. This achievement belongs to all of you.” – Wayne Coetzer, Vergelegen MD.

In honouring its origins, the team shared that it is sourced from the Somerset West estate’s cooler, south-east-facing vineyards overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. For those interested in all the wine-speak, it is “elegant and refined with mineral overtones; it is dominated by notes of lemon, crushed rosemary and fresh apple.” Fancy!

This win proves that South Africans don’t just love wine; we pour our hearts into it! We’ve got an award-winning bottle for every palate and occasion. And let’s be honest: we don’t just drink wine; we pair it with sunsets, braais, and stories that get better with every glass.

How flippen blessed are we? Well done to the Vergelegen team; thank you for flying the South African flag and winning!
