In the heart of KwaNgwanase, a group of dedicated volunteers from Buckets and Bags of Love are working tirelessly to bring hope and relief. This incredible organisation is providing essential food supplies to families struggling to put food on the table.
KwaNgwanase, South Africa (06 December 2024) – In many parts of our beautiful country, there exists the heartbreaking reality of families who have very little to get by or even make ends meet. Thanks to the tireless efforts of non-profit organisations such as Buckets and Bags of Love, many desperate souls have a door to knock on.
Before the pandemic, the group would do an annual fundraiser so volunteers could distribute about 250 buckets of food to people in the kwaNgwanase community, also known as Kosi Bay Town, over the course of a few days.
The buckets contain only basic food items and last a family of 4-6 people for about a month.
“The goal was to deliver them all on the same day or around the same time. Make life a little easier for people around Christmas time, something less to worry about,” shares volunteer, Yvonne Spierenburg.
But as many can attest, Covid-19 hit the community hard, not with the illness itself, but with the big increase in food prices, leaving many already struggling families in dire circumstances.
“For over a decade buckets and bags of love would have an annual distribution, but at the end of the pandemic we noticed it wasn’t working anymore. Too many people were in desperate need of food throughout the year.
“The organisation always helped throughout the year, but it was just a bucket here and there, now there is a lot more need for food,” Yvonne explains.
Buckets and Bags of Love works closely with local clinics, the hospital and churches to ensure that the buckets end up in the right hands. Doctors, nurses, social workers and pastors regularly reach out to the organisation to appeal for food buckets, and that’s when the organisation decided to change the concept.
“Buckets and Bags of Love no longer has a huge annual distribution day, but gives buckets year-round where needed.
“When somebody is without food and money a bucket can be requested it will be delivered by one of the amazing volunteers,” Yvonne shares.
With the countdown to Christmas already underway, the team of do-gooders has been working especially hard and this week managed to put together several buckets of staples such as maize meal, rice, sugar beans, peanuts, soup powder, soy mince, soap, tea, onions, candles, matches, salt, sugar, onions, cabbage and oil.
But many more families, who are carefully picked out by care workers, still need support in making their December month a little easier. To support this mission, email bucketsandbagsoflove@gmail.com or view the baking details below to make a donation:
