Beloved Cape Town bakery, Charly’s Bakery relished in the honour of getting to make none other than the legendary Dr Jane Goodall’s 90th birthday cake!

Cape Town, South Africa (13 March 2024) — Charly’s Bakery, a beloved Cape Town bakery known for cakes so beautiful in their creativity that it almost feels wrong to tuck into them (though tucking in with immense pleasure is non-negotiable), recently created a one-of-a-kind birthday cake.

Not only was the cake deemed exquisite because of its aesthetic (which is on another level even for the most talented decorators among us), but for who it honoured.

This celebration of a 90th birthday in brilliant cake form was for none other than Dr Jane Goodall. Yes, the same Dr Goodall who has dedicated most of her life to protecting chimpanzees from a fate of extinction.

A legend in the world of primate conservation, her work throughout the decades has not only been groundbreaking for fellow wildlife enthusiasts but hugely transformational for a world of the past where conservation and the plight of wild animals were not mainstream concepts, especially when it came to chimpanzees.

The bakery shared their absolute joy in having the honour of making Dr Goodall’s birthday cake earlier this month. Of course, the vegan cake featured a life-sized baby chimpanzee in incredible detail, much to the awe of anyone who has ever struggled with icing a cupcake.

On the top-tier, a drawing showcases a young Dr Goodall with a chimpanzee; a heartwarming window to her world.

Capetonians couldn’t be more proud to have had their own gem of a bakery behind something incredible for someone incredible.
