The Rea Thusana Home is celebrating a bittersweet but beautiful milestone as its very last resident steps out into a bright new chapter.

Cape Town, South Africa (09 April 2026) – An open door and a secure roof for those who have hit rock bottom and found themselves on the streets. That is the lifeline the Rea Thusana Home in Cape Town has offered for so many in tough times of uncertainty.

During the pandemic, the Rea Thusana Foundation (RTF) hosted seven vulnerable and abused women from the streets of Muizenberg and Capricorn community at Church of Holy Spirit (CHS) for four months. This compassionate effort helped five women reunite with their families, restoring their hope and connection. With the help of governmental departments, some of the women gained access to the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) programme.

A partnership with Freeway Rehabilitation Centre in Retreat also offered access to rehabilitation for six men. Four men completed the programme. One of them joined the U-turn Homeless Ministries Life Change programme and was reunited with his family.

The organisation has continued to work with partner shelters and organisations over the years before establishing its own halfway home, which has supported the vulnerable looking to get back on their feet.

This week offered a bittersweet moment as the Rea Thusana Home said goodbye to its last resident, Kealin, as she moves on to her next chapter at U-turn.

“Kealin, having you at Rea Thusana Home has truly been a gift to us. From the very first moment we met you at Pollsmoor Prison, we sensed that God had something beautiful and powerful planned for your life. Walking alongside you has reminded us so much of His grace, how gentle, patient, and restoring He is,” RTF Founder, Phinius Sebatsane.

The Home’s impact is life-changing and is evident in the story of fellow resident, Tesnim, who is doing so much better than when she first arrived and is choosing to rise again.

Phinius said it was encouraging to see her again and to witness her strength as she steps back into recovery.

It is heartwarming to see a local institution fulfil its mission so well. With its premises currently empty and hopeful to welcome the next group of vulnerable women who need a place of refuge and healing, Phinius is appealing for funding support from the community to help keep its doors open.
