‘Charity Begins with Me is sowing the seeds of hope by assisting its local community to build a food garden for the spring.

Fairlands, South Africa (19 August 2024) – With Spring just a few weeks away, Stephen Ferreira is collecting vegetable seeds for the community garden, giving everyone a chance to get their hands dirty and grow food for their families and the greater community.

‘Charity Begins With Me’ started as a feeding scheme to feed children every Sunday. Founder Stephen Ferreira started by feeding 50 children, but it grew to more than 400 every Sunday over time. The non-profit has since grown into a fully-fledged organisation that supports and uplifts an entire community.

The food garden has been a longstanding project, and it is ready for the new season. Spring is the best time of year, especially for those wanting to start growing their own food. We have a whole guide dedicated to it here.

Some examples of seeds you can donate that will go far are as follows:

  • Swiss Chard
  • Cabbage
  • Pumpkins
  • Carrots
  • Peas
  • Beetroot
  • Onions
  • Garlic
  • Turnips
  • Spring Onions
  • Kale
  • Broccoli
  • Radish

You can reach out to Stephen via Facebook here to donate your seeds; he is located in Northern Johannesburg, Fairlands.
