Long walks to school are now a thing of the past for 50 Grade 9 learners thanks to the Qhubeka Charity and Star Foundation who came together to address the burdens of many less fortunate children which ultimately affect their academic performance.
North-West, South Africa (05 March 2025) – In South Africa, thousands of young people face the reality of having to walk long and tiresome distances to and from school every day along dusty roads, burdened by the weight of their books.
Something as simple as the gift of a bicycle can make a world of difference in these children’s lives, alleviating the physical strain and time taken to cover the distance from home to school.
The Qhubeka brings relief and improved mobility to people and underserved communities with the simple act of assembling and distributing bicycles.
When the Star Foundation learned about the charity’s invaluable work in helping those in need get around better, it did the Lord’s work!
In an effort to help 50 Grade 9 learners at Sefutswelo High School in Uitkyk better commute to school every day, the Star Foundation partnered with Qhubeka and donated R425,000 towards new bicycles!
“Each scholar received a brand-new bicycle in February, along with spare parts for maintenance and a range of cycling accessories.
“Because cycling is 3.5 times faster than walking, The Star Foundation’s bicycle donation will transform the daily commute to school for these learners. The new bicycles will not only reduce travel time and enable on-time arrival at school but will also ensure that scholars have more energy to focus on their studies, leading to better academic performance and greater participation in school activities,” the Star Foundation said.
To ensure that each learner was properly prepared for their new rides, they were taught how to ride, how to use the accessories and spare parts for maintenance, and the importance of following road rules before receiving their bikes.
“We are excited to see how each bicycle will have its proud new owner pedalling towards a brighter future,” the Star Foundation said.
