A Durban-based pianist, composer and researcher was the recipient of a prestigious award in the world of music, earning magnificent recognition for his music composition!

Durban, South Africa (17 March 2024) — Durban-based pianist, composer, and researcher Sibusiso “Mash” Mashiloane has been awarded the prestigious HSS Award for Music Composition—a recognition that celebrates artistic merit and cultural depth showcased in his album “Music from My People.”

The award, presented by the National Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences (NIHSS) Awards, honours significant contributions in the Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) fields, and is one that holds great meaning for Sibusiso.

“This award is deeply meaningful…it not only validates my work, but also serves as a powerful reminder to our people, particularly the younger generation, of the importance of tradition and cultural music – the very foundation of our musical identity.”—Sibusiso Mashiloane.

Sibusiso’s album, which blends the vibrant tapestry of African music styles with the sophistication of Jazz, stood out amongst other submissions. The jury even made a point of commending its “high production quality and a level of composition that reflects the artist’s experience”. Notably, the pianist and composer also received long listings for two other albums, “Izibongo” and “Ihubo Labomdabu”.

Beyond music composition at its finest and most unique, Sibusiso’s piano playing is characterised by both technical finesse and a dynamic style. His ability to guide the music with precise timing allows the album’s elements to seamlessly interweave and evolve. Each track presents a distinct soundscape, drawing inspiration from South Africa’s cultural heritage. Collaborations with a multitude of talented musicians further elevate the album, their collective contributions and individual performances solidifying its recognition!

On the research side of his multifaceted musical journey, focus has centred around the concept of “the sounds of home”. This has been embodied in his PhD studies, directly influencing his creative process and wrapped up in sound, evident in “Music from My People.”

This critically acclaimed album joins a string of successes for the musician, including 6 previous awards and nominations for prestigious accolades like the SAMAs and the AFRIMA Awards.

A key figure in the South African Jazz scene, Mashiloane’s artistry continues to garner international attention. His dedication to his craft, exploration of cultural heritage, and his multifaceted role as lecturer, researcher at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, and relentless pursuit of understanding “the sounds of home” position him for a future filled with boundless creative endeavours!
