Things were looking rocky for Ed Sheeran after he was accused of copying ‘Let’s Get It On’, to the point where he shared that he would retire if that were the case. Well, there’s good news for Ed and all Sheerios:

New York, USA (05 May, 2023)—There are a few places we’d expect to find Ed Sheeran. A stage or pub, perhaps anywhere near an acoustic guitar. The middle of a courtroom, however, just didn’t seem right.

In case you missed it, Ed Sheeran and his fans went through an emotional rollercoaster recently, after the singer, songwriter—and source of many of the world’s favourite love songs—was accused of copying Marvin Gaye’s ‘Let’s Get It On’ in Sheeran’s ‘Thinking Out Loud.’

A two week courtroom battle ensued. Over the course of the period, the singer even mentioned that if he were to be found guilty, he would quit music for good.

However, the jury has spoken, and Sheeran won the case; found to be not guilty of copying Marvin Gaye’s work!

According to the BBC, a musicologist told the court that the four-chord sequence (the heat of the matter) had been used in many songs before Gaye’s 1973 hit.

Here’s What the Singer Said of His Win:

“I am obviously very happy with the outcome of the case, and it looks like I’m not going to have to retire from my day job after all – but, at the same time, I am unbelievably frustrated that baseless claims like this are allowed to go to court at all.

“We have spent the last eight years talking about two songs with dramatically different lyrics, melodies and four chords which are also different and used by songwriters every day, all over the world.

“I am not and will never allow myself to be a piggy bank for anyone to shake,” —Ed Sheeran.

Meanwhile, Sheeran’s ‘Subtract’ album releases today, and the timing couldn’t be more apt.
