What do you get when a chartered accountant ditches spreadsheets for sledgehammers? One of South Africa’s most entertaining YouTube success stories. This is Flipping Johannesburg!

Johannesburg, South Africa (25 March 2025) – Some stories just light you up, and Flipping Johannesburg is exactly that. It’s fun, it’s inspiring, it’s wildly bingeable… and honestly, it’s become one of my absolute favourite South African YouTube channels.

What makes it so good? It’s interesting. It’s engaging. It’s informative. And it’s totally entertaining. Something that’s hard to nail all at once. Which is exactly why I wanted to share it with you.

The channel was created by Steve Baron, who left his job as a chartered accountant in 2022 to pursue something he genuinely loves: flipping houses. What started as a passion project has turned into something much bigger. And his decision to start sharing tips and advice during lockdown sparked an idea that’s grown into a YouTube success story.

“During lockdown I decided to open up to my more creative side. I’ve always had a keen interest in photography and filming so I already had quite a collection of before-and-after pictures. I decided to put together a proper portfolio of all my projects and make short videos offering advice and tips,” he said.

We actually featured Steve back in 2022 when he launched his very first video and again when one of his home flip videos was nearing a million views. That same video is now sitting just shy of 3 million views, and it’s easy to see why. His content hits that perfect sweet spot: real-life renovation with a bit of chaos, a lot of creativity and just enough dry humour to keep you smiling. It’s like Grand Designs meets Joburg suburbia, with a South African twist that makes it feel both fresh and familiar.

Since those early uploads, Steve’s channel has grown into a bit of a local legend. He’s not only shared countless home transformations, but he’s also built a community of DIY lovers, hopeful flippers and property dreamers.

And if you’re just discovering his work now, his latest flip – affectionately dubbed the “Tuscan Disaster” – is a rollercoaster you’ll want to ride from start (don’t worry, he’s nowhere near finished).

You can also catch up on fan favourites like the “Dream Home,” the “Abandoned Ruin House,” or the one that started it all, “Project H.”

What Steve Baron has done is more than just flip houses. He’s turned his creativity and knowledge into something that educates and inspires thousands of South Africans to believe in the power of starting something new, especially if it makes your soul feel a bit more alive.

So if you’re looking for something to make you feel excited about South African talent, a little bit obsessed with house makeovers, or even just ready to pick up a hammer and try something different, go give Flipping Johannesburg a watch. You’ll thank me later.
