The Maternity Ward walked away with the prize at Groote Schuur Hospital’s annual cook-off competition; all the staff enjoyed the fun day.

Cape Town, South Africa (23 November 2023) – Last week, the Groote Schuur Hospital hosted its annual charity cook-off, a favourite amongst the staff, and the Maternity Ward earned the winning title.

The charity cook-off took place at Groote Schuur’s Palm Court. It was a fully-loaded day and the chefs, tasters and judges were surrounded by colour, delicious smells and of course, delectable flavours. Much like a festival, there was music and fun to be had, all in the name of doing some good.

“We have good support every year, and it’s always a great way to start wrapping things up as we approach the end of 2023. This year the Cook Off has a movie theme. It’s also a tense time for the teams that come from across the hospital departments – will the reigning champs from Radiology keep their title, or will it go to someone new?” explains Social Committee member Develin Basson.

According to Heroes of Groote Schuur, this year the judging was taken even more seriously, with the appointment of three chefs (two of whom came from the Vineyard Hotel) to the judging panel.

“This is ultimately a charity fundraiser,” says Develin. “This year we are focusing on stationery packs for Grade Rs at underprivileged schools, so with the money raised we’ll be buying supplies.”

In the end, it was the Maternity Team that walked away with the 2023 prize, giving the judges a sweet treat for the win.
