Brave doggo, K9 Night fearlessly apprehended a suspect during a house break-in this week. In the line of duty, he faced a brutal struggle that threatened his life, but thanks to the care and quick thinking of his handler, Officer Damian Theron, Night is recovering well and will be ready to serve and protect once again.
Gqeberha, South Africa (24 April 2025) – K9 “Night” is no doubt a hero who has captured our hearts with his recent display of bravery, risking his life during a house break-in in Providentia, Gqeberha.
According to police, SAPS Gqeberha K9 responded to a complaint of a housebreaking in progress in the early hours of Monday, 21 April.
It was then, during a search of the home in question, that a suspect jumped out of a cupboard and ran towards a window. K9 Night swiftly apprehended the suspect, who in turn viciously attacked him, leading to severe injuries to Night’s throat and neck.
When Night’s handler, Warrant Officer Damian Theron, noticed blood, he knew something was wrong. Without hesitation, Theron took off his jersey and wrapped it around the dog’s neck to prevent more blood loss and rushed him to a local veterinary hospital for treatment.
“I was overwhelmed with concern. He is more than a working dog; he is my partner,” said Theron, as shared by The Citizen.
His immediate action to slow the bleeding and rush Night to care undoubtedly saved this brave canine’s life.
The community (along with us) breathed a sigh of relief following an update that Night is on the mend and was discharged from the Walmer Veterinary Hospital yesterday, 23 April. He was warmly welcomed home by his partner in crime-fighting, Theron.
“He will be off duty for three weeks but will make a full recovery and be ready to protect and serve the community of Gqeberha.
“Night was very excited to be reunited with his handler, and Night will be in recovery at the Gqeberha K9 unit, where he will be taken care of,” reported the South African Police Service.
As for an update on the case, Night’s bravery in the face of danger was not in vain as the 21-year-old suspect was arrested and detained at SAPS Walmer on charges of housebreaking and trespassing.
Night, your courage and resilience have inspired us. You deserve all the praise!
