An organisation called Chefs with Compassion began feeding hungry people during lockdown.

Johannesburg, South Africa (08 October 2021) – During the Covid pandemic, many people lost their incomes and couldn’t afford to buy enough food. But millions of tons of food are thrown away in South Africa each year. Much of this is still edible. During lockdown, Chefs with Compassion used food that would have otherwise gone to waste to make nutritious meals for hungry people.

Chefs with Compassion is a non-profit organisation that aims to rescue food, cook and feed hungry South Africans. Launched in May 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, CWC has provided over 2.1 million meals across Gauteng and aims to continue as long as the need – and the supply of nutritious rescued food – remains.

Adel Van Niekerk heads to Johannesburg to meet some of the people involved with turning the waste food into nutritious meals. Take a look at the feature below.
