140 members of the Isaiah 54 Children’s Sanctuary joined forces to champion the legalisation of baby savers because every child deserves a safe start, and every mother in crisis deserves a path of compassion.

Durban, South Africa (04 May 2026) – The debate over Baby Savers in South Africa has been a deeply polarised battle between giving desperate mothers an option to give their babies a safer chance at a life and the strict legal enforcement of such facilities, among other ethical concerns.

At its heart is a fight for innocent lives – one championed by members of the Isaiah 54 Children’s Sanctuary and their supporters, who marched along the uMhlanga Beach promenade over the weekend to raise awareness and demand safe abandonment laws.

“South Africa needs Baby Savers. And the people doing this life-saving work need to be protected by law,” Isiaiah 54 Children’s Sanctuary said.

“Because here is the truth, raw and uncomfortable: A mother in crisis, a mother drowning in fear, judgment, poverty, shame, postnatal depression, a mother who feels completely alone. If abandonment is already in her mind, she is going to abandon.”

The organisation went on to emphasise this reality, stating that judging mothers in such a position or wishing the issue would disappear simply doesn’t change anything.

“So why are we not giving her a safe option?”

According to the Durban-based home, legalising these facilities allows mothers to choose life even when they cannot choose parenthood. Without this safe, anonymous alternative, innocent lives end up in the most awful places with little chance of survival.

Reflecting on the well-supported march, the organisation reiterated its message that puts the safety of the voiceless and most innocent lives at the centre of all the controversies:

“Today was not the finish line. It was pressure, it was presence, it was a statement. We showed up, and we stood up. And we used our voices for the babies who don’t get a second chance and for the mothers who feel like they have none. Thank you to every single person who walked with us, stood with us and refused to stay silent.”
