The KwaZulu-Natal Museum officially opened its brand-new gallery last week, celebrating a 120-year history of preserving and sharing the rich cultural and natural heritage of the region.
Pietermaritzburg, South Africa (02 October 2024) – The history of KwaZulu-Natal and its people runs deep. From their struggles and triumphs to their cultural heritage, the beauty of this region lies in the footsteps of those who came before us.
The KwaZulu-Natal Museum in Pietermaritzburg plays a vital role in preserving this legacy and collecting and preserving artefacts for generations to come.
Recently, the museum celebrated its 120th anniversary with the grand opening of a brand-new gallery. This milestone marked a continued commitment to showcasing the region’s rich cultural and natural heritage.
The momentous occasion was filled with elation and the jubilation of song and dance, with Heritage Symbols and Cultural History Assistant Sboniso Gcumisa leading a drama production that paid homage to the museum’s 120-year existence.
Renowned archaeologist and senior curator at the KZN Museum, Dr Gavin Whitelaw, also gave an insightful presentation titled 120 Years of Collecting, Research and Exhibiting at the KwaZulu-Natal Museum.
The presentation touched on the museum’s legacy of extensive collections, groundbreaking research, and exceptional exhibitions, which have captivated audiences for over a century.
The new gallery is a culmination of the museum’s dedication to educating and inspiring visitors about our collective history and natural world. It highlights some significant objects and research gathered over the KwaZulu-Natal Museum’s 120-year history.
The museum looks forward to welcoming people from far and wide to experience an incredible journey down memory lane through this amazing new exhibition.
