While everyone’s excited for beach days, KZN’s lifesavers are gearing up, too – thanks to some awesome funding! They’re getting new rescue boards, flags, and all the cool gear to keep you safe.
KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (18 December 2024) – It’s DEZEMBA, folks, a highly anticipated time to kick back, relax and just have some good old fun with the ones you love. For many who find themselves basking in all the glory of the season along KZN’s sunny seaside, beachgoers can rest assured that trusted lifeguards are geared up and ready to heed the call of duty.
Lifesaving KwaZulu-Natal, a dedicated voluntary organisation providing water safety and surf rescue services through its affiliated clubs, has been awarded crucial Lotto funding to support its mission.
This funding enables the organisation to supply local voluntary lifesaving clubs with essential rescue equipment and specialised gear for lifesaving sports ahead of the bustling festive season.
“Twelve lifesaving clubs stretching from Glenmore Beach to Umhlanga Main Beach, and as far inland as Ladysmith, will benefit from this initiative,” says Troye Brown, Chairman of Lifesaving KwaZulu-Natal.
“Equipment such as rescue boards, patrol and duty flags, torpedo buoys, and duty bunting will significantly enhance our readiness to keep beachgoers safe.”
This festive season, vigilance is especially key following the recent tragedy of 13 drownings, 10 of which occurred in the province. Each incident took place at non-designated bathing areas without lifeguards present.
“As the holiday season approaches, we urge all South Africans to prioritise safety at the beach and pool,” says Brown.
“Simple precautions can save lives.”
Brown urges the public to adhere to the following water safety tips:
- Swim only at beaches patrolled by lifeguards.
- Always stay between the red and yellow flags, indicating safe bathing zones.
- Avoid swimming if under the influence of alcohol.
- Parents should maintain constant supervision of their children near water.
- Protect your skin with sunscreen and stay sun-smart.
- Follow lifeguards’ instructions at all times.
- Always swim with a buddy; never swim alone.
- In an emergency, remain calm and signal for help by raising your hand.
- If someone is in trouble, alert lifeguards immediately or seek assistance.
- Be mindful of weather conditions, rip currents, and tide changes.
- Familiarise yourself with beach safety signage.
Lifesaving KwaZulu-Natal remains committed to its mission to safeguard communities and visitors along the province’s shores.
“With this funding, we are equipping our clubs and reinforcing our commitment to water safety. We urge everyone to respect the ocean, follow safety guidelines, and work with our lifeguards to make this holiday season safe and enjoyable for all,” stresses Brown.
