Hope for the Future, a non-profit organisation led by the compassionate Vanessa Nelson, is hosting a daily “Kings and Queens Breakfast” for the Grade 12 learners of Modderdam High School in the underprivileged community of the Cape Flats.

Cape Town, South Africa (01 November 2024) – With matric final exam season well underway the Grade 12 learners of Modderdam High School have been treated like kings and queens through a daily four-course breakfast before they head into the exam room.

The Kings and Queen’s Breakfast is an initiative by Hope for the Future, a non-profit organisation run by Vanessa Nelson, who was moved to do a little something special for Grade 12 learners in her community three years ago.

“When my last-born son was in his matric year in 2020 I wanted to do something special for him in recognition of his hard work and dedication throughout the 12 years of his schooling.

“So I had the idea to host a matric breakfast at his school (outside of the community). But he asked why I didn’t host the breakfast for the schools in our local community of Heideveld where poverty and many other social issues are rife.”

The Hope for the Future team united to bring this breakfast initiative to life. It began in 2021 at Heideveld Secondary School, followed by Cathkin High and Modderdam High. Now in its fourth year, the project aims to reach even more schools.

With many delicious and nutritious delectables available every exam morning, learners are treated to a variety of cereals, pancakes, muffins, eggs, salads, sausages, vieannas, bread, fruits, tea, coffee and juices.

“This is something that they deserve. Twelve years of schooling is not easy and many of these youngsters experience many other challenges outside of academics.

“Poverty, drug abuse and gangsterism are a reality in our communities. Many of these youngsters haven’t been exposed to a fancy spread of food and that is why we make it a point to make the Kings and Queens Breakfast extra special for them. We want to give them that extra support and motivation they need,” Vanessa shares.

For many, the Kings and Queens Breakfast is the only source of a proper and nutritious meal.

“Their smiles, appreciation and hope for the future mean everything. It feels so good to give back to them.”

With matric exams only concluding on 28 November, Vanessa and her team could do with all the support and food donations that they can get.
