Botanical artist Sally decided to help little artists unlock their own talents thanks to a creative project, “My Friend as a Flower”, in which they got to draw and paint their friends as different flowers; channelling observation skills while getting to learn more about SA’s flower power.
Prince Albert, South Africa (20 June 2024) — A special creative project, “My Friend as a Flower—my vriendin as n’ blommetjie” has encouraged children to unleash their creativity whilst learning more about the characteristics that make their friends unique!
A clever way to teach children the art of observation whilst also igniting drawing and painting passions, the project came to non-profit PACT’s Pop Centre in Prince Albert thanks to artist Sally Arnold.
An initiative that’s right up her alley (Sally is a botanical artist), over recent days in June, little artists got to work imagining what their friends would look like as flowers and ultimately bringing their perspectives to life.
Armed with brushes and fabric paint, a long white sheet soon bloomed with colour and childhood creativity.
The children were prepared beforehand by learning more about flowers in our country, where they saw firsthand that flowers have their own personalities and that art is not just about recreating something you’ve seen before but using what you’ve seen before to inspire something new.
The final sheet will be hung up at the Pop Centre for people to come and see the finished works.
Who knows, these budding botanical artists might just one day work their way to Sally’s talent, or Daleen Roodt who recently won RHS gold and Best Artwork on show at the RHS Botanical Art Show!
