Quality of the Items You Donate

Giving is great, but giving something you wouldn’t mind receiving yourself is even better. Here’s your reminder to double-check that what you’re chucking into the charity donation box is as good as your intentions.

Johannesburg, South Africa (07 January 2026) – Life without a secure home, a stable income, or the guarantee of a next meal can feel incredibly trying and uncertain. For those living in shelters or those working to rebuild their lives after a crisis, donated items can make a world of difference.

Often, the simplest things are what help someone through a rough patch: a clean living space, decent clothes, gently worn shoes, fresh sheets, and nutritious food. Sadly, however, some donations fall short of being clean or carefully considered.

Beanies for Beings extends a gentle reminder to all our well-meaning supporters – to give back with the dignity of the recipient in mind.

“We can honestly say that we are fortunate and grateful to receive donated items from generous community members.

“A good portion of these items are in excellent condition, sometimes even new, but unfortunately, we also receive donations that, although they are well-intentioned, lack care and dignity for our beneficiaries,” Beanies for Beings shares.

The charity is currently sitting with a shed full of unusable, non-donatable items. Items that have taken volunteers hours to sort through.

Though some people may think that donating unwashed, faulty or expired items is better than not donating at all or that “something is better than nothing”, the truth is that people in need are just as deserving of items in good condition and have the same needs and wants as everyone else.

“They want to, and absolutely deserve to wear clothing that has no stains, rips or holes. Imagine trying to go to a job interview without feeling confident in the way you look. Or sending your child to school wearing clothing that is stained, or shoes that are broken.”

Beanies for Beings stresses the importance of assessing whether items intended for charity will help beneficiaries feel empowered and uplifted.

“We know that donations of imperfect items are given with a generous spirit, but the reality is that people who have experienced the trauma of homelessness, poverty or abuse are just like all of us. We’re all human, we all have worth and feelings.”

Everyone deserves the chance to face life, no matter how challenging it may be, with dignity. So, the next time you’re gathering donations, be sure to check the quality of the items and make sure they are as dignified as your good intentions.

“Help us to send the message to those receiving the donations that they are worthy, respected, valued and loved, just as much as all of us deserve to feel.”
