At Red Cross Primary School, young patients turn imagination into art, discovering themselves through drawing, clay, and storytelling.
Western Cape, South Africa (25 February 2026) – At the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, education and creativity go hand in hand, helping young patients find joy during challenging times. The hospital’s primary school, one of only three in the Western Cape accredited by the Department of Education, supports 420 children each term, many facing conditions like cancer, organ failure, or severe burns.
In a recent session, learners explored their dreams through drawings, each backed by a little narrative. They then brought these illustrations to life using clay, transforming their 2D ideas into 3D creations.
Amanda, who works with the learners, explained the value of clay in this process.
“Working with clay helps develop fine motor skills and encourages thinking in 3D. You can move it, shape it, break it, and rebuild it. It’s therapeutic. With drawings, you’re limited, but clay allows them to interact, experiment, and express themselves in a tactile way.”
Alongside art, the school incorporates drama, music, and homework support, creating an environment where young patients can continue learning while processing big emotions.
Support from donors helps bridge funding gaps, ensuring these lessons continue to bring hope and healing to children at the hospital.
