In 2016, the late Archbishop Desmond Tutu wrote an inspiring letter to a newborn named Juliet; the letter has been shared again to inspire hope.
Global (08 February 2022) – The world is sitting in a bit of a weird space at the moment. Life seems to be coming around again after the pandemic, but the western world seems to be in the grips of political upheaval. It is tough to navigate these situations and remember we are all here for the same reason, and that is to live life and live it well.
Hollywood celebrity Reese Witherspoon recently shared a letter written by the late Archbishop Desmond Tutu. The letter was written in 2016 to a then newborn Juliet from America. Juliet’s father had wanted to compile a book of letters for her, so he wrote to various heads of state, celebrities, and leaders in faith. The late Archbishop was one of the people asked to write a letter, and he responded with the most profound and hope-inspiring letter.
“A beautiful reminder from the late Archbishop Desmond Tutu. We were all born with the same purpose” – Reese Witherspoon
The letter was shared on social media in 2016 and went viral. Reese recently shared it again with the hope of inspiring people to see we are all here for the same reasons.
We loved reading the letter again. Take a look below.
Dear Juliet
Hello, little sister.
You don’t know me. I am a very old grandfather from South Africa nearing the end of my journey on earth while your journey – on another continent many miles away – is just beginning. We may never meet on earth, so I thought to send you a secret. Well, it’s not really a secret because we should all know it. So I don’t mind if you tell everyone else.
Did you know that all people belong to one family, the human family? That although we may look nothing like each other, live in separate homes, practise our own cultures, subscribe to different religions – and some of us have more money than others – we are all sisters and brothers of God’s family.
You and I, and everyone else, were born with the same purpose. For love, for goodness and for one another.
God Bless You.
Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu
Cape Town, South Africa
July 2016
