After President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the recommended restrictions on public transport, people asked “what about the taxis?”, well, they made a plan in Durban!
Durban, South Africa (18 March 2020) – The Chesterville taxi rank was visited by the South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) yesterday. The council took hundreds of hand sanitiser bottled which they handed out to taxi drivers and used to educate the commuters.
Just yesterday we shared the Twitter thread by ThaboBluebird about how government need to step up educational processes in the taxi ranks. We are so happy to see that SANTACO has stepped forward and are taking active roles in working with the public and taxi drivers.
Santaco KwaZulu-Natal chairperson Boy Zondi said that Chesterville is only the beginning, they plan to spread the information to taxi ranks across KZN to ensure the public take the necessary precautions.
“Hlokomela means care, it falls under our programme, we’re carrying on with our programme Hlokomela,
“We are handing out hand sanitisers to taxi drivers and we are speaking to them, and telling them to speak to passengers to use these sanitisers as a way of promoting hygiene in the taxis.” – Boy Zondi, Santaco KwaZulu-Natal Chairperson
The council have said that when the hand sanitisers run out, drivers should head to the Santaco regional offices in Durban central. They have enough stock to do refills.
“Also we are encouraging taxi owners to come out of their houses, they need to take part, they need to go to taxi ranks and help the drivers refill the sanitisers,”
