A viral image showing a child’s school books covered using packaging from a popular fast food chain inspired Velabahleke High School staff to share a message that true success lies not in material possessions but in the effort, values, and resilience students bring to their education.
Umlazi, South Africa (14 January 2025) – A humorous photo circulating the internet of school exercise books covered using KFC bags poked fun at the “Januworry” woes as parents prepare their kids for back to school. While the image easily sparked some laughter among some netizens, it inspired a powerful message on humility from Velabahleke High School in Umlazi, KwaZulu-Natal.
While the likelihood of a child whipping out an exercise book covered in takeaway packaging could easily make them a laughingstock of the class, Velabahleke High used the example as a lesson to parents to teach children the value of humility. That expensive stationary or book covers hold no weight if children cannot appreciate the value of what they have or respect those with less than they do.
“Small lessons in humility can go a long way in shaping their character for the future.
“Teach them that true success isn’t about impressing others with material things but about the effort and values they carry in their hearts. Let’s remind them that education is the greatest equalizer, and how they treat their tools of learning reflects their attitude toward life itself,” Velabahleke encouages.
The school emphasised that children from disadvantaged backgrounds should never made to feel ashamed of their circumstances.
A simple act, like covering a book, even if it is with reused packaging, demonstrates responsibility and respect for what they have – even if it is not much. A world where a child is able to carry such a covered book with confidence, without fear of ridicule, would reflect a generation that values hard work, humility, and self-respect above all else.
“It starts with small actions and consistent guidance from us as parents and teachers. Let’s work hand in hand to nurture responsible, respectful, and humble learners,” Velabahleke appeals.
