South Africans are rallying behind the failing restaurant industry and coming up with innovative ways to support them through the next 14 days.

South Africa (29 June 2021) – South Africans are coming up with clever ways to help their local restaurants. The news that broke the nations heart was shared this past Sunday and dictates that all restaurants are closed for the next 14 days. They have been advised take away options will be allowed, this was done in an attempt to prevent the total collapse of the restaurant industry.

People have not sat by idly and many restaurants have adapted and started offering take away options in the hope of staying afloat.

Here are a few ways South Africans are working together to save an already vulnerable industry.

  • Takeaways OPEN was launched yesterday and within a matter of hours, has been supported by over 8000 people with numbers growing daily. The Facebook Page is promoting all the restaurants that have adapted to the take away rules. They are being encouraged to use the platform to share their menus, specials and contact details so people can support them.
  • Push the Produce has been launched to help restaurants and cafes sell off their newly ordered stock that will most likely expire before doors can open again.Essentially, you can do some grocery shopping at your local favourite, helping them recover costs and saving food from the landfill.
  • Beacon Isle Kwikspar has opened its shop to restaurants offering pop-up take aways. Each week they will help a few of their locals to cover expenses while absorbing the bulk of the overheads so each restaurant can make some profits.

They are helping to save 4 restaurants each week over the next 14 days while we ride out this wave of economical lockdown.

You can show your support by:

  • Buying vouchers to use at a later stage, even as gifts for birthdays etc
  • Asking the owner for the cell number of your favourite waiters and e-wallet them some money here and there to get them through the next 14 days and possibly beyond.
