While the 16 Days of Activism Against Women and Children may have ended, the fight continues. During the vital campaign, the Teddy Bear Foundation delved deep into the complexities of abuse, exploring themes like recognising signs, breaking the silence, and safeguarding children.
Johannesburg, South Africa (12 December 2024) – A society that is safe for all doesn’t just happen; it requires awareness, collective action, and a community coming together to look out for the vulnerable. Protecting our women and children against the silent scourge of abuse is an ongoing mission that needs to be highlighted and exercised at any given chance.
As the country marks a close to 16 Days of Activism this week, the Teddy Bear Foundation South Africa reflects on their efforts in addressing this complex, multi-layered issue and the collective responsibility we share in addressing gender-based violence and child abuse.
For the foundation, the campaign emphasised the importance of community involvement, survivor support, and empowering individuals through education and awareness.
“Each day of this campaign focused on a vital theme, from understanding the impact of GBVF and child abuse to recognising the signs of abuse and encouraging communities to break the silence and report it.
“We explored strategies for safeguarding children, supporting survivors with trauma-informed care, and empowering women and children through education and awareness,” Teddy Bear Foundation shares.
Beyond awareness, the foundation also tackled a crucial element of this issue by engaging with men and boys on topics of prevention and promoting respect and boundaries in healthy relationships. Children were also taught about about body safety and consent.
“We delved into the role of communities in protection, the processes of reporting abuse and seeking justice, and the significance of including children’s voices in decisions that affect them.
“Critical issues like addressing false allegations in custody disputes, prioritising mental health and healing for survivors, and advocating through action were also key themes.”
While these 16 days have come to an end, the mission continues. The organisation also celebrated progress while committing to the vision of a future free from abuse.
“Let us carry the lessons, conversations, and commitments forward, ensuring that every action we take contributes to a safer and more equitable society for all.
“Together, we can break the cycle of violence and build a future rooted in safety, dignity, and hope.”
