Fridays are for finding the light — a weekly moment to pause, breathe, and remember that joy still exists. The Friday Five is your ultimate guide to the good stuff… movies that move you, series that stay with you, songs on repeat, places that feed your soul, and all the little things worth celebrating right now.

Johannesburg, South Africa (21 March 2025) – Fridays are more than just the end of the workweek… they’re the beginning of something lighter. Something a little brighter. They’re the day we exhale, pour a glass of something nice and take a moment to remember that life is actually pretty incredible.

And I know what you’re thinking… it’s not really a Friday this week as we have a public holiday but the good news never stops and so every Friday comes with one of my favourite things – The Friday Five.

This isn’t just a random list or a scroll-stopper (although it does that too). The Friday Five is your weekly go-to guide for all things good. Movies, series, books, music, food, places to go and everything in between. It’s a collection of everything I’ve loved this week, curated with heart and delivered with joy.

You see, I get invited to some pretty amazing things – early screenings, exclusive events, restaurant launches, press drops – and I feel so incredibly lucky to be able to experience these moments. But what makes it all even better is being able to share it with you.

That’s what Friday Five is. It’s not just about what’s new, it’s about what’s lekker – and why it matters.

🎬 15 Movies That Will Restore Your Faith in the World

Okay, I’m changing it up a bit this week. Usually, I give you one or two movie recommendations… but in the past couple of weeks, I watched fourteen. Well, technically, fourteen and a trailer (for an upcoming movie).

I went on a deep dive into films that stir something bigger than just entertainment. I watched movies that inspire faith.

Now hold up – I’m not just talking about religious faith (although some of them definitely fall into that category). I’m talking about faith in people, in second chances, in the sheer resilience of the human spirit. These are the kind of movies that hit you right in the feels – the ones that make you cry, then leave you with a full heart. Honestly, I’ve been crying for days. But in the best way possible.

It’s Lent – a season of reflection, renewal, and yes, faith. So, in the same way December gives us cheesy Christmas movies and October is full of horrors, I thought: why not March be about meaningful, heart-lifting cinema?

Some of these films are based on real-life stories. Some are beautifully written fiction. But every single one holds the same powerful reminder: there is light, even in the darkest moments. And sometimes, that’s exactly what we need.

I wrote a whole separate article with the full list – and if you’re looking for something to restore your hope in humanity, start by clicking here.

📺 Series You Need to Be Watching

🫣 Adolescence (Netflix)

When a 13-year-old boy is accused of murdering a classmate, the story that unfolds is nothing short of gut-wrenching. “Adolescence” is currently one of the most talked-about series around the world – and it’s not hard to see why.

The cinematography is next level. Every shot is intentional. Every moment, loaded. But it’s not an easy watch. It’s a slow unravel. A deep emotional rollercoaster. You’ll find yourself holding your breath – wondering what really happened and, more importantly, why.

The performances are haunting. The story will stay with you long after the credits roll. It asks big questions about truth, mental health, and what it means to protect the people we love – even from themselves. And it does it with so much heart. Highly recommended. Watch it on Netflix now.

🦸🏻‍♂️ Daredevil: Born Again (Disney+)

You know I’m a Marvel fan, right? Well, “Daredevil: Born Again” just dropped and it’s brilliant. It’s a reboot of the 2015 series, which means you can dive into the new episodes and binge three full seasons of backstory. (You can even go all the way back to the 2003 movie with Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner… although that’s more nostalgic than necessary.)

In this new chapter, Matt Murdock (the blind lawyer by day, masked vigilante by night) finds himself on a collision course with Wilson Fisk (again), and the stakes feel even more personal. The action is wild, the fight scenes are crisp, and the story has real depth. Action-packed. Gritty. Smart. Streaming now on Disney+.

🪄 David Blaine: Do Not Attempt (Disney+/Nat Geo)

I was lucky enough to get invited to an exclusive preview of David Blaine: Do Not Attempt, and wow – I’m still thinking about it.

This isn’t just a magic show. In fact, it’s not really about magic at all. It’s about connection. It’s about humans doing incredible things with their bodies, their minds, their culture and their legacy. Blaine travels across the globe – from Brazil to India, the Arctic to South Africa – meeting masters of their crafts. And when I say South Africa… I mean properly South Africa.

We got to see David Blaine experiencing parts of our country in ways that surprised even him. The whole episode is filled with awe and that quiet kind of wonder that stays with you. Worth the watch. Streaming next week on Disney+.

🎧 Music You Need in Your Life Right Now

Let’s talk about the songs I’ve had on repeat this week – and no, I’m not exaggerating. I actually can’t stop listening.

🎶 HAIM – “Relationships”

I don’t know what kind of sonic glitter HAIM sprinkled into this track, but it’s addictive. There’s something about the rhythm, the lyrics, the vibe – it crawls into your ears and refuses to leave. This one’s been on repeat since the minute it dropped. It’s smooth, it’s emotional, it’s catchy. Ear-drugs, honestly. I’m obsessed.

🎶 Sugababes – “Jungle”

YES, THEY’RE BACK! The queens of early 2000s pop have returned and “Jungle” is vintage Sugababes in all the best ways. It’s got that familiar sass, the catchy chorus, the empowering energy. Honestly, I didn’t know how much I missed them until this dropped. Let’s bring back flip phones and double denim while we’re at it?

🎶 Jensen McRae

Mark my words – Jensen McRae is the breakout artist of 2025. She’s been making waves on TikTok and now she’s dropped three pre-release tracks from her upcoming album, and I am calling it: she is one of the best songwriters and vocalists I’ve heard in a long, long time. Each track is pure poetry – raw, vulnerable, clever, and sonically stunning. She’s going to be massive.

Also, I’ve now curated all these gems into a playlist on Apple Music! So if you’re looking for good vibes and soulful sounds to accompany your day, give it a spin. (Apologies to my Spotify peeps, but I’m team Apple.) Trust me, you’ll want these tracks on repeat all weekend.

🍽️ Places You Have to Go

Clay Café at Maggie’s Farm – Lanseria

This one is for the soul. Imagine a place where art, food and vibes all merge into one beautiful day out – that’s the Clay Café near Lanseria.

It’s not just about painting ceramics (although that part is really fun). It’s about slowing down. About getting creative. About sitting with friends and family and doing something that feels a little bit different. And it’s all set on Maggie’s Farm – the home of the Chicken Pie (and yes, it lives up to the hype).

Start your day with a delicious farm-style breakfast, then settle into some pottery, sip on something cold, eat something warm and then end it all by stocking up on the most delicious home-baked goods at their farmstall. It’s a full day of magic. Highly, highly recommended.

🌟 One More Thing

If you follow me on social media, you’ll know that I post a daily column. Just little thoughts, reminders, things that sit heavy or light on my heart. And this week, two of them seemed to really land.

The first was about finding good things:

“South Africa, the world, the internet. It’s all buzzing…

Did you know it takes six positive things to pull us out of a negative state? Like, if you read a kak headline or get a not-so-lekker email, you need six good things to bring you back to baseline.”

And it’s true. Whether it’s science or just lived experience – it matters. The more good we feed ourselves, the more balanced we feel. That’s what Friday Five is really all about. Helping us find those six (or more) good things to bring us back to centre.

The second was about happiness:

“Happiness isn’t about the grand gestures or the picture-perfect moments.
It’s in the ordinary, the unexpected, the in-between…”

And it is. Happiness isn’t loud. Sometimes, it’s quiet. It’s sitting in a warm patch of sun. It’s finding a song you can’t stop playing. It’s a good meal. A moment of connection. A well-told story. It’s those tiny glimmers that pull us back to ourselves.

These two posts are connected – they remind us that it’s our job to seek out the good. To find the joy in the ordinary. And when we do, we start to see that even in chaos, there is still so much light.

❤️ And So, To End…

Fridays are a reminder. That no matter how the week has gone, we get to start again. That there’s always something worth smiling about. That good things exist – not just on this website but all around us.

So whether your week has been hard or soft, loud or quiet, overwhelming or perfectly calm… I hope this Friday Five gave you something to hold onto. A movie to cry through. A series to obsess over. A song to belt in the car. A plan for the weekend. A reason to smile.

And if today feels heavy? I hope you find even the tiniest moment that feels light.

Catch you next Friday. There’s so much more good to share.
