Johannesburg, South Africa (22 November 2024) – Seven weeks in, and I am absolutely loving this! The Friday Five is my chance to bring you my opinion on the best good things in the entertainment and lifestyle world.
From movies to series, albums, places, and even better trends, it’s a curated list of happiness that I get to share with you each week. Ready to dive in? Let’s go!
🎬 Movies for Your Watchlist:
“Wicked” has officially landed in cinemas today and it’s safe to say this is one of the most anticipated films of the year! Whether you’re a fan of the musical, have read Gregory Maguire’s brilliant book, or are just curious about this reimagined tale from the land of Oz, this one is for you.
The story follows Elphaba, a young woman misunderstood for her green skin, as she navigates life and an unexpected friendship with Glinda, a popularity-obsessed student. Their journey leads to a dramatic crossroad after an encounter with the infamous Wizard of Oz, revealing how even the best intentions can set lives on vastly different paths.
What you need to know before heading to the cinema:
- It’s a musical, so expect incredible numbers that will tug at your heartstrings.
- Run time: 2 hours and 40 minutes—get comfy and settle in.
- Expect to be moved. It’s beautifully crafted and worth the wait.
Watch the trailer below:
In the late 90s and early 2000s, Hallmark was the go-to place to binge B-grade Christmas movies. And I’m sure it still is. The problem is that many people don’t know where to find that channel or streaming service now.
But if you’re like me and love a bit of festive cheer, then Netflix has become your go-to for Christmas movies. This week, The Merry Gentlemen dropped, and it’s as delightfully cheesy as you’d hope!
The plot? A former city dancer decides to save her parents’ small-town performing venue by staging an all-male Christmas revue.
It’s light, fun, and exactly what you need to get into the festive spirit. Will you remember the storyline in a year? Probably not. Will it make you feel like Christmas is already here? Absolutely.
🎥 Series You Should Be Watching Right Now:
The 90s nostalgia continues with the return of Cruel Intentions, but honestly, some things are best left in the past. This reboot on Amazon Prime follows two step-siblings who climb the Greek life social ladder at a Washington D.C. college. After a hazing incident goes wrong, their paths take a dramatic turn as they aim to seduce the Vice President’s daughter.
The reviews? Not great. And it’s not my favourite this week. It feels like it lacks the magic of the original cult classic. Watch at your own discretion.
On the brighter side, one of my all-time favourite series, Based on a True Story, is back with season 2!
The hilariously dark comedy follows a realtor, a former tennis star, and a plumber as they capitalise on America’s true crime obsession in the most absurd way. Packed with twists, turns, and laugh-out-loud moments, this is the kind of show that keeps you coming back for more.
Season 2 has dropped in the USA and will be on South African screens soon. If you missed season 1, catch it on Peacock or Showmax now!
🎶 Music You Need to Hear:
Let’s start with the obvious: the Wicked soundtrack dropped today. If you’ve seen the movie, you’ll want this in your playlist. The vocals are stunning, the orchestration is perfection and it’s a must-have for any fan of the musical.
But that’s not all. Michael Bublé has teamed up with Carly Pearce to gift us with a brand-new Christmas song, “Maybe This Christmas.” It’s everything you’d expect from Michael—warm, nostalgic, and overflowing with heartfelt lyrics. Carly’s voice adds an emotional depth that makes this duet a standout addition to your festive playlist. Trust me, it’s going to be on repeat.
🧠 Things to Know:
Forget Black Friday—it’s time to focus on something way more meaningful: Giving Tuesday.
Black Friday has become a global shopping frenzy, with consumers chasing discounts and retailers vying for attention. While it can be tempting to snag a deal or two, the focus on materialism often overshadows the true spirit of the season: generosity, kindness, and community. That’s where Giving Tuesday comes in—a movement that flips the script and reminds us of what really matters.
Taking place the Tuesday after Black Friday, Giving Tuesday is a global initiative encouraging people to give back in ways that truly make a difference. Whether it’s through donations, volunteering your time, or simply helping someone in need, this day celebrates the power of collective action to bring about meaningful change.
Think about it: instead of spending hours waiting in lines or frantically scrolling through online sales, you could spend that time supporting a cause that matters to you. From feeding hungry families to funding education programmes or planting trees, the possibilities for positive impact are endless.
What makes Giving Tuesday even more special is its inclusivity—anyone, anywhere, can take part. You don’t need a big budget or an elaborate plan. Even small acts of kindness, like paying for someone’s coffee, donating pre-loved items to a shelter, or simply sharing encouraging words, can create ripples of goodness.
So this year, why not make a shift? Skip the Black Friday chaos and redirect that energy towards making the world a little brighter. After all, the best kind of “deal” isn’t about saving money—it’s about spreading joy.
