Through various community-driven initiatives that respond to real-life challenges, the Tutuse Community Project is uplifting the young, old and in need across small villages in the Eastern Cape.

Eastern Cape, South Africa (20 January 2026) – In the heart of South Africa’s rural Eastern Cape, where opportunity is often limited, but resilience runs deep, one local initiative is proving that good things can grow anywhere.

Tutuse Community Project, founded by King Sambu from Lady Frere, is a grassroots organisation dedicated to uplifting rural communities through dignity, education, and opportunity. What makes this initiative special is how it uses community development and tourism as tools for positive change.

A Community-First Vision

Tutuse Community Project supports disadvantaged learners, at-risk youth, the elderly and persons living with disabilities across villages in and around Lady Frere, Cofimvaba, and Tsomo, by responding to real, on-the-ground challenges such as poverty, lack of school essentials, unemployment and substance abuse exposure with practical, human-centred solutions.

One of their flagship initiatives is the Back-to-School Shoe Drive, which aims to restore dignity and motivation among rural learners who attend school without proper footwear.

Back-to-School, Back to Hope

“From 23–25 February, Tutuse Community Project is rolling out its Back-to-School Shoes Drive, targeting 600 learners from two high schools and three primary schools in under-resourced rural areas.

“For many of these learners, school shoes are not just footwear. They are a source of confidence, protection from stigma and a reminder that someone cares,” shares Founder King Sambu.

Beyond shoes, the campaign encourages learners to focus on education, work hard, and stay away from drugs and harmful behaviour, using motivation and positive role modelling rather than punishment or fear.

Tourism With a Purpose

What truly sets this initiative apart is how local tourism is being used to sustain community work.

Through SK Sambu Tours and Transfers, Sambu has created a rural-based tourism service that promotes local cultural experiences, community tourism, heritage and village tours and authentic Eastern Cape hospitality

“A portion of the visibility and income generated through tourism helps amplify and support community initiatives like the shoe drive and elderly support programmes. Tourism becomes more than travel; it becomes impact,” says Sambu.

When Good Things Take Root in Small Villages

In a time when many rural communities are only spoken about in the context of struggle, Tutuse Community Project is changing the narrative:

  • From charity to dignity
  • From dependency to empowerment
  • From being forgotten to being seen

“This is a story about local leadership, homegrown solutions, and the power of ordinary people choosing to do good where they are. It’s proof that when community, education, and opportunity come together, hope walks in, sometimes wearing a new pair of school shoes.”

How You Can Help

“Because good things don’t only happen in big cities, sometimes they start in a small village with a big heart,” concludes Sambu.
