Prince William is in South Africa for the Earthshot Prize Awards and took the time to visit the VUSA Rugby & Learning Academy. During his visit he got to see the Atlas Foundation’s Digibus, a mobile classroom equipped with 37 laptops to support digital learning for primary school learners.
Cape Town, South Africa (07 November 2024) – Young eyes widened with excitement as primary school pupils from the community of Langa and surrounds, were honoured by a royal visit. Prince William graced their presence during the unveiling of the ATLAS Digibus at the Ocean View High School.
The showcasing of the Digibus, an innovative mobile education project donated to the VUSA Rugby & Learning Academy by the Atlas Foundation and corporate donors, coincided with Prince William’s visit to South Africa for the annual Earthshot Prize Awards.

The event highlights the importance of education in fostering sustainable change and aligns with VUSA’s mission to support young learners.
The Atlas Digibus, a generous mobile classroom donation to VUSA, was made possible thanks to the bus donation from the Atlas Foundation and corporate sponsors who make the entire programme possible; it serves five primary schools in Langa, addressing the critical need for a smooth transition from mother-tongue instruction to English for Grade 4 students while also introducing Grade 5 students to essential coding skills.
This fully equipped mobile classroom, featuring 37 laptops, delivers vital language and digital literacy education directly to children in need.
“The foundation phase is the time when children learn to read so that in later years they are reading to learn. It is especially challenging for children to meet Grade 4’s curriculum demands if the language they have learned to read in does not match the language of instruction,” says Nikki Matthews, COO of VUSA.
“The Digibus bridges that gap, demonstrating measurable improvements in reading and mathematics.”
This memorable visit, which also saw the Prince enjoying a fun game of rugby with some of the youngsters, not only created lasting memories but also shone a spotlight on the impactful work done to help children thrive.
