Rosalind Packer started a crowdfund to build her domestic helper a new home after the recent rains washed away most of her mud hut and left her with almost nothing.
KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa – Rosalind Packer has known Nonhlanhla Ndlovu for almost ten years. Nonhlanhla has worked for Rosalind’s family for years and become an integral part of the family.
When Rosalind heard that most of Nonhlanhla’s home had washed away during December, she knew she needed to help. The house, made from mud and sticks, is struggling to remain standing and becomes more brittle with each new rain.
“She is one of the most amazing women I know – a 49-year-old single mother of two, without any family to help support her. Nonhlanhla has worked for my mother and I, for almost 10 years and is the most wonderful, sweet and hard-working lady.
Nonhlanhla’s house (made of mud) has been devastated by the recent downpours in KwaZulu-Natal. As a result, she and her family are all sleeping in the one remaining room. This room is being held up by a flimsy, damaged wall made of rotting sticks, which may give way at any moment.”
Rosalind says that Nonhlanhla has lost her peace of mind as the house is so fragile, it could come down around them at any moment.
“Nonhlanhla is not sleeping well at night, as she fears that this fragile wall may collapse on her and her family. Nonhlanhla has already laid the foundation of a new house, which she planned to build over the upcoming year, but because of her financial situation, she can only complete a one small project at a time. The concern is that now her existing house may crumble before she has completed the new one.”
Rosalind has been helping Nonhlanhla buy supplies here and there but as the state of her current home has become so dire, she hopes to speed up the process.
“I have helped Nonhlanhla buy the blocks to build her new home, but now we need your help to get this project finished before the rainy season completely destroys what’s left of her current house and leaves her homeless. I wish I could cover the full expense, but I simply cannot do it alone.
The new project is a very simple structure, but it will be a whole new beginning for Nonhlanhla and her children. I just want them to be safe and not fearful every time the sky starts to cloud over.”
