Be happy. Count your blessings. Try to see the good things. Make this journey called life easier for people around you.
Johannesburg, South Africa (19 October 2022) – Because sometimes we just need a list to make us see a different perspective, so here is a list of 10 reasons to be happy today!
10 – There are exactly 10 Fridays to Christmas!!! And that means I get to see my family and spend time with people I love.
9 – The Leave a Bag, Take a bag initiative has now spread to all corners of South Africa. I am being tagged daily in SPAR stores, Butcheries, little Vegetable shops in small towns and yes, even every now and then by Woolies. How flipping cool?
8 – Tali is back… and the trailer for Season 4 has just been released. Comedy at its best. Plus, Anton Taylor is my favourite; you’re ridiculously funny my friend.
7 – A neighbour’s cat went missing 25 days ago. They spent every single day on the streets looking for her. The family posted to our community groups hoping that someone had seen her. Other neighbours got involved and went on searches to try to find her. Received a message last night that she has been found… hungry and tired but okay. Heart-warming and so flipping special.
6 – Ja, Loadshedding is kak but we’re all somehow getting through it. Some of us have batteries, inverters, solar or something to keep us working… even if that means heading down to your favourite little coffee shop to get connected. We avoid traffic, and plan braais, and make sure we can lend a helping hand to neighbours who may need it. We are there for each other, even when the power is out.
5 – It’s a BONES day! When you know, you know. LOL.
4 – Our tourism sector is BOOMING in South Africa… not to mention 3 of our resorts have been named best in the world, Cape Town has been given the title of Africa’s Leading City Destination and Klein Jan has topped the list as the most Extraordinary Fine-dining Experience out of all the restaurants around the globe!
3 – The rainy season is finally starting in Joburg! A little late this year, but we are thankful all the same. Our area has been plagued with water issues which just don’t seem to end. Knowing that our dams, boreholes and JoJo tanks will be filling up with the good stuff makes my heart so happy.
2 – It’s been 890 days Mackenzie Friedman was formally diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia. This little fighter, who we all now know as Mighty Mack, continues to inspire every single day. The “little girl with big purpose” brings so much joy to everyone that follows her journey. Go check out her Facebook page; it will be the most heart-warming thing you do today. Promise.
1 – South Africans haven’t lost all hope… or their heart. Even in this crazy time where people are really angry on social media (and like to say hateful things because they feel like they need to choose an imaginary side), we are still okay and inherently good. People are helping each other. People are being kind. People are just being lekker. I know this because I am submerged in the goodness (and these amazing stories every single day). Do not let the minority of nasty people make you believe that everyone is the same. In times of tragedy, the helpers are always there.
We are here. We are alive… and we have been given another beautiful day to be the best possible versions of ourselves. How lucky are we?
That’s it. Count your blessings. Try to see the good things. Make this journey called life easier for people around you.
Okay. Love you. Bye.
