Looking at what’s happening in the Western Cape over the last few days makes me more concerned about humanity as the days go on.

Western Cape, South Africa – What is wrong with us? We find a community in disaster – we all band together to help, from all over the country. Banks, supermarkets, corporate companies, individuals. Some serious action has been made…. yet then we get persecuted for not helping every other destitute, homeless or unemployed person in this country daily.

The banks get knocked for donating, yet charging high fees – people feeling entitled that they personally are actually contributing to those big amounts, not the bank.

DOES IT MATTER????

No good deed goes unpunished as they say… why do we always find a negative? Why is it in our human nature to say oh BUT you didn’t do this.

Look at what we DID DO.

Because the simple truth – is that you cannot help everyone. It’s just not possible.

So do what you can, where you can, when you can if it changes someone’s life today – amazing. If it’s a good deed done in 10years time, also amazing. But let’s try to refocus on what has happened again – we have come together as a nation…. as humans, to help others in need.

That’s what counts.

And if a positive, long term spin can come from this, for example, people signing up for monthly charity debit orders, fantastic!

I am someone who votes for a better SA. I am someone who donates to hospice whenever I can. I am one who helps a struggling car guard when I can see the helpless look in his eyes. I’ve crocheted blankets for abandoned babies. I hand out food to beggars when I can. I march for SA when I can – despite being told it’s in vain. And I’ve donated to the Knysna Fire Relief Fund.

Looking back I’ve donated/given my time to many causes over the years – and in all honesty, it’s a pin drop in the ocean of what needs to happen. Has it helped? Well, I hope so.

Can I help everyone in need? No. But I can try wherever I can.

And if we all do that – consciously and as often as we can… imagine the change we can create. Just Saying.
