Race debates are a popular topic on social media but recently one Tweet started a discussion that was truly inspirational.

Diane Redelinghuys shared a beautiful Tweet about 4 black guys helping a white woman change her flat tyre in a dangerous area. The guys were incredibly selfless and kind by helping the woman. The tweet started a conversation that is rather important in South Africa where the race debate often flares into heated discussions.

To start, people discussed the race descrimination when it comes to crime in South Africa…

“Once found a white female university student with a flat tyre between Bethal and Ogies. We stopped and she locked all the car doors, I asked her to open the boot, we took out the spare wheel and we changed the tyre. Waved goodbye. Honestly I stopped because I felt scared for her” – HarryM

Diane confirmed that it was very unfair to distrust based on race so another gentleman commented that maybe her distrust was in crime itself.

“Agree. But crime is NOT race based as some people try to make it” – Diane Redelinghuys

This was only the begenning of the conversation, most of which was incredibly well thought out and debated in a clear and calm manner unlike most race conversations on Twitter.

“I had a tyre burst just after Haartees, I was assisted by Afrikaans speaking father and son. I literally walked into the pub, it was only white people in there and asked for help. Racial issues are a choice.” – Blessing M

The responses to the Tweet have been great and the constructive conversations around race are proof that in South Africa, we have the ability to have difficult conversations without decending into anarchy. You can read the full thread from the Tweet below.
