Magic of Christmas

While many may know Christmas as a special holiday, some don’t always feel its magic. The stresses of life and financial hardships can easily dampen the festive spirit. However, sometimes it can take the smallest acts to inspire one to create their own Christmas traditions and rediscover the joy of the season.

Durban, South Africa (18 November 2024) – I’ve always known that Christmas is a special time. Many people get excited about celebrating this one magical day in December weeks before it even approaches.

‘Tis the season that comes with the promise of joy, family time, carols, gifts and depending on how young you are, Santa Claus popping in for a visit too!

So, I’ve always known this, whether or not I’ve always felt the “magic” of Christmas is a different story. And until recently, I hadn’t really noticed this. But seeing so much Christmas content around me and working with a team whose warm festive spirits are so infectious; made me wonder – “Why aren’t I as giddy about it?”

In a moment of a little self-introspection I realised that while I’ve always loved the idea of Christmas, I think the spark of excitement I had about it got dimmed during childhood.

Growing up, things weren’t always rosy, particularly during my formative years. I vividly recall the excitement of school holidays approaching Christmas, dreaming of festive shows, eagerly anticipating gifts, and even writing letters to Santa. I mean, that’s what they did in the movies, right?

But, my parents were going through their own personal challenges at the time and finances were tight for quite a while. So, inherently my excitement wasn’t met with nearly as much enthusiasm.

I believe that’s where the magic eventually faded away. This isn’t to say that Christmas Day was dreadful; it always included a special menu and time spent with family. However, it often felt more like an item to check off a to-do list than a joyful celebration.

Now, though, I’m realising that this season doesn’t have to continue to carry that mood. If I want to make it special, I have the power to do so. I can go out of my way to get the Christmas tree, and the decorations, attempt a festive recipe, go see the Christmas Lights Show I’ve been curious about and even do the cheesy Christmas photoshoot in matching outfits with my little family!

I can find the magic of Christmas again and be giddy about it, too! So, to all those around me who have been sharing the festive spirit, thank you for rekindling something magical in me.
