South African Activist

Nomarussia Bonase has been a South African Activist for over 20 years. After years of fighting for justice and woman’s rights, she has been awarded the Anne Klein Women’s Award.

Nomarussia Bonase became a South African Activist during the Apartheid-era after witnessing gross human rights abuses. She started the Khulumani (meaning: speak out) support group nearly 20 years ago to fight for justice and for the woman’s rights within her country.

Nomarussia was named the winner of the Anne Klein Woman’s Award for 2017, for her commitment to making gender democracy a reality.

“The Anne Klein Women’s Prize is awarded for the sixth time and is endowed with 10,000 euros. The prize was presented at a ceremony on March 3, 2017 in Berlin, held by Ulrike Poppe, commissioner of the state of Brandenburg.”

DW reported on the award and posted a video detailing the struggles that Nomarussia and other woman had endured and what she is fighting for.

“South African activist Nomarussia Bonase has worked tirelessly for women who suffered under apartheid to receive the recognition and compensation they deserve.”

The Khulumani Support Group wants to build an inclusive society, one that will restore the dignity of those harmed during Apartheid, and turn them from victims into victors. The support group is challenging the current government to rectify this but to date has received no response.

“Started by survivors testifying at the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), Khulumani has become a globally recognised movement spear-heading healing and memory, the struggle for reparations, and active citizenship in countries transitioning out of conflict. “

It is fantastic to see that Nomarussia is being recognised internationally for her hard and diligent work. She attended the award ceremony in Germany with her proud daughter at her side. Nomarussia will continue to fight for the rights of others.
