The Wall Street Bull has been a New York attraction for nearly three decades. It now has a very defiant but worthy opponent, a little bronze girl
The Charging Bull bronze, otherwise known as the the Wall Street Bull has been a popular attraction since its installation in 1989. The bull was placed on Wall Street to be symbolic of the aggressive financial optimism and prosperity on the street.
Jump forward nearly three decades and the entire working world has changed drastically! Woman are fighting for equal pay and for better job titles, going places where they always dreamed they could. Running companies and becoming influential members of boards. However, there is still resistance and struggle. Woman are still not entirely represented in high level roles and are still drastically underpaid in comparison to their equal male roles.
An asset manager, State Street Global Advisors, commissioned a bronze of a defiant little girl facing up to the Charging Bull. The little girl is a symbol of the female struggle, to show that woman can stand where men do. The new campaign is to pressure companies to add more women to their boards. The bronze is accompanied with a plaque saying,
“Know the power of woman in leadership”
State Street Global Advisors said it would vote against boards if a company failed to take steps to increase its number of members who are women. It also plans to send out 3,500 letters to various companies, asking them to act in favour of the female initiative.
“One of the most iconic images on Wall Street is the charging bull. So the idea of having a female sort of stand against the bull or stand up to the bull just struck us as a very clever but also creative and engaging way to make that statement. Even though it’s a little girl, her stance is one of determination, forwardness, and being willing to challenge and take on the status quo.”
