From festive fun to life lessons, a game of strategy highlights the importance of communication, trust, and standing your ground.
South Africa (08 January 2026) – During the holidays, game nights with friends become a staple. Rooms filled with laughter, strategy, and a bit of friendly competition. One game that stood out this season was Mafia, a social game where deception, deduction, and persuasion are the keys to survival. On the surface, it’s just a fun way to pass the time, but it also mirrors lessons about life. The power and necessity of speaking up.
For those unfamiliar, in Mafia, a small group of players is secretly designated as “mafias,” while the rest try to identify them. The mafias know each other and work together to outsmart the others, while everyone else debates, defends, and convinces each other of their innocence. Success hinges on communication, trust, and the courage to speak up.
While I was a mafia, I experienced firsthand how quickly trust can shift and how vulnerable you can feel if you don’t speak up. One of my fellow mafias betrayed me, and suddenly I had to defend my position, explain my actions, and convince the group. It was tense, but it was also a powerful reminder that staying silent, even when you know the truth, can put you at a disadvantage.
This moment made it clear that the lesson extends far beyond game night. In life, whether at work, among friends, or in your community, it’s essential to express your perspective, stand by your choices, and communicate with intention. Trust, accountability, and awareness (the same skills that determine outcomes in the Mafia) are what help you navigate relationships, opportunities, and challenges effectively.
So, while Mafia is entertaining, it’s also a lesson in action. Speak up. Defend your position. Don’t wait for someone else to tell your story for you. Speaking up isn’t just about self-preservation; it’s about ensuring your voice matters in situations where it counts.
