Just days before Christmas, Firefighting heroes battled and brought a fierce wildfire in Paarl under control.
A massive fire in the towering Paarl mountains is finally under control with no evacuations required, the Drakenstein municipality said on Friday.
“There was and is no need to evacuate the area or homes,” spokesperson Riana Geldenhuys said.
This was after “aggressive” overnight firefighting operations by some of our best South African heroes, in spite of strong winds.
“Due to the collective efforts of all role players we managed to contain 80% of the fire. Aerial support was activated with first light to try and bomb the last line at the head of the fire. New ground teams was deployed to do mopping up and all fire crews are on high alert for possible flare-ups. We had no damage to property.”
Justin Sullivan from “Walking with Fire” was on the scene to document the tragedy.
Sullivan has been exploring photography in the greater Cape Town region for the past 2 years, broadening his expertise in Documentary Photography – specialising in Cape Wild Fires.
After completing his secondary schooling at the all-boys-boarding school Michaelhouse, Justin studied Development & Environmental Studies at the University of Stellenbosch. Justin completed majors in Geography & Environmental Studies, Public & Development Management, and a half-major in Sociology.
Sullivan now focusses his work on highlighting contemporary issues within South Africa, using photography to display insights into an unknown world. His documentary work from numerous Wild Fires around Cape Town has been highly recognised both locally and internationally, with various publications for print and online media.
