Despite the initial shock of an end-stage kidney failure diagnosis at just 38, Edward Campher chose to embrace life and treatment, having been on dialysis for 25 years.

South Africa (18 March 2025) – Learning about a life-threatening health condition is enough to send just about anyone into instant shock and panic.

While Edward Campher may have presumably had a similar initial reaction, he did not let learning about his end-stage kidney failure diagnosis define how he’d continue to live his life moving forward; nevertheless, he let it dampen his spirit.

The former teacher was diagnosed at the age of 38, and despite the severity of his condition and initial fear that his life was over – he has lived on!

With March being National Kidney Month, it’s a cause that aims to educate the public about the importance of kidney health and the impact of kidney disease, encouraging early detection and promoting healthy habits.

Although kidney disease is extremely serious and affects millions of people across the globe, early detection is key, and Edward’s story is a moving example of how there is still life on the other side of this illness.

He has been on dialysis for 25 years in fact, and Edward is thriving!

“All these years later, he’s proof that kidney disease doesn’t have to define your future. With the support of National Renal Care and his loved ones, Edward continues to live a full and meaningful life,” shares Netcare Limited.

With his heartwarming smile, this kidney warrior is an inspiration to those on a similar journey and reminds us all to cherish the gift of life.
