67 Blankets, founded by Carolyn Steyn, visited Nazareth House in Yeoville to distribute handmade winter blankets to the young and old living there.
Nazareth House provides a haven for the elderly and orphaned children of South Africa. The first house was established in 1881 and now there are homes spread all across South Africa.
Carolyn Steyn, a popular South African actress and philanthropist, holds Nazareth House near and dear to her heart as her mother grew up in one of the homes. It is this that led to her charity, 67 Blankets, to donate warm winter to the people living at Nazareth House, Yoeville.
During the 67 Blankets’ Guinness Book of World Records event in 2015, Carolyn met a young man named Junior Hill. She took some time after the event to teach him how to crochet. He was at the most recent blanket drop off with Carolyn.
“I didn’t realise then that he would be back in my life five years later with some of the most beautiful blankets,”
Junior has perfected his skill and now makes many blankets to donate to charity.
“I made these blankets for the children who don’t have parents. I want the blankets to keep them warm, and help them feel they are not alone and they are loved.”
Caregiver at Nazareth House Neo Khumalo said, “The whole situation is extremely touching… The winter is coming, and we always need blankets so the thought that people made these blankets and gave to Nazareth House is so beautiful.”
