When a restless Abri Spies felt the urge to break free from his everyday routine and do something extraordinary, he turned to running—a challenge that soon evolved into a mission to make a difference! This “slow runner”, who boasts a heart dedicated to helping those in need, has achieved some really awesome things. Now, he hopes to extend his efforts to support young cancer warriors.

Cape Town, South Africa (27 March 2025) – Most of us are familiar with the encouraging phrase “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade”. Looking to make this ‘lemonade’ for countless young children courageously facing their toughest health battles yet, is the Lemon Tree Kids.

This charity is run by members who pride themselves on being lemonade makers and, through various projects, are committed to helping children with cancer and to getting them the best medical treatment available in a warm, comfortable environment.

Hoping to support this charity’s cause is passionate, yet self-proclaimed slow runner, Abri Spies.

Touched by the Lemon Tree Kids’ compassion towards young warriors and inspired by the efforts of Pretoria Boys High and their involvement with the charity, Abri has taken on the personal challenge to run 56km at the Two Oceans Ultra Marathon in April.

The 53-year-old runner plans to approach the race one stride at a time, with the goal of raising R100,000.

“My running journey began in 2018 as a midlife crisis turned to passion, culminating in my first Comrades Marathon finish in 2019—just 16 minutes before cutoff—while raising R80,000 for a Primary School towards building a school hall,” shares Abri who hopes to push the limits once again this year.

Abri considers himself fortunate to be in a position to run for those who can’t, especially for children who fight battles bigger than any marathon.

We wish him all the best as he prepares for this compassionate cause!
