Monica Leisa has been the bedrock of her family, tirelessly providing for her three children and her unemployed husband. And even now, after a life-changing double leg amputation, she is still fighting to bring her family closer to a safer, more manageable life.
Bloemfontein, South Africa (16 July 2025) – As a strong woman who has faced everything life threw her way with strength and grace, Monica Leisa never imagined she’d share her story as a double leg amputee learning to adjust to a completely new way of living.
She recently underwent the life-changing surgery, which, although it has been met with an incredibly tough journey, hasn’t taken away her strength and fighting spirit.
“This journey has been incredibly difficult – but I’m still here, still fighting, and still holding onto hope,” Monica shares.
Before this unforeseen chapter of Monica’s life, she was the breadwinner for her family and worked hard to provide for her three children and husband, who is currently unemployed.
“Since my amputation, our family has faced not just emotional challenges, but significant financial strain.
“I’m blessed to have a loving and supportive husband who does all he can to help me, but the physical and emotional demands have taken their toll on both of us.”
Monica now uses a wheelchair to move around, but even with it, everyday tasks have become incredibly difficult.
“Getting in and out of bed, moving to a chair, or using the bathroom takes far more effort than I ever imagined,” says the mother of three.
Determined to reclaim her life and restore some sense of normalcy for her family, Monica is courageously fundraising for ongoing care, recovery, and a crucial hydraulic transfer lift chair, a mobility device she believes will transform all their lives significantly.
“This equipment would allow me to move safely and comfortably, without needing to be lifted manually. It would reduce pain, preserve my dignity, and most importantly, help restore a sense of independence and ease for both me and my husband.”
Monica has launched a BackaBuddy crowdfunding campaign to help garner support as she navigates a new part of her life, which requires the help and kindness of others, not just for herself, but also for those who depend on her.
“If you’re able to give or even just share this campaign, you’re helping bring us one step closer to a safer, more manageable life for me and my family,” she appeals.
