bus driver

A bus driver in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA, jumped into action to help a blind man cross thr road after it was dug up for roadworks.

69-year-old Gene Hubbard has been blind for the last 20 years due to his diabetes. He continued to go to work unassisted knowing exactly how to get there from the bus stop. However, recently the intersection he usually crosses underwent some construction and he found himself unable to navigate the roadworks.

“If I don’t have a regular locating point to start from, I may as well be in the middle of the ocean,” Hubbard told WITI.

Thaddaus Turner, Gene’s bus driver on this fateful day, could sense that Gene was feeling anxious. So as he made the stop, he quickly unbuckled himself and went to assist Gene. He followed him off the bus and took him by the arm, guiding him across the tricky street.

A car in the oncoming lane had stopped to allow them to pass but little did either of them know, that the driver, Sydney Kazmierczak, taking a photo of Turner’s good deed as he crossed the road. Sydney sent the photo to news outlets to praise Turner for his kindness.

“I feel like I was placed there at the right time to capture this moment!! I am so happy I quick pulled out my phone to snap the picture! Thad deserves to be recognized!!” – Sydney Kazmierczak.

Her picture went viral and soon Turners employers saw it. They pulled the footage from the bus and created the video of the good deed below. Turner was surprised that the image went viral and in an interview with CNN, said he was just doing what felt natural to him. Something he knows his collegues would also do in a heartbeat.

“The route was barricaded, it was rough for me as a driver, I can only imagine how rough it was for him, I was surprised when I saw it in the news. I didn’t think I would be here right now over something that is second nature to me, and my colleagues.”

Watch the kind moment below. Remember when a Durban bus driver also got caught on camera doing a good deed? That was one of our favourite moments from 2017!
