For decades, a beloved bushveld guide has helped make wildlife adventures memorable. Now at a time when he needs an important surgery, the visitors he made an impact on over the years are showing up to do something unforgettable for him!

Mpumalanga, South Africa (15 September 2023) — They say that the warmth you give to others comes back around, and for one bushveld guide Lucas Chauke, this sentiment couldn’t be more fitting.

Lucas Chauke is a hard-working employee of Timbavati Private Nature Reserve who, for a small lifetime of around 30 years, has been committed to his love of the bush and all its treasures.

From tracking and spotting wildlife to guiding curious visitors through some of Mpumalanga and Limpopo’s most tantalising landscapes, Lucas is part of the furniture at the Nature Reserve.

However, he’s well respected by the people he’s guided on their trips not just because of his experience or tenure. What appears to make a trip with Lucas almost as special as spotting a white lion is his gentle energy and warmth—safari highlights all their own!

Because of his nature that’s made experiencing nature that much greater for many, people were saddened to discover that Lucas faced tough times that would impact more realms of life than his job alone.

25 years back, Lucas suffered an accident that left him needing a hip replacement. As time went on and his hip replacement wore weaker, he needs a hip revision operation (a long stem prosthesis of the femur) to help with the constant pain and prevent further struggle.

According to the Eagle Owl Camp Team who organised his crowdfunding effort, Lucas is at a high risk of not being able to walk should he not undergo the operation.

And so, people gathered around the proverbial waterhole of well wishes and help. Heartwarmingly, many of those who contributed to his new surgery were people he had guided on adventures or had learnt from him in one way or another— an epic display of warmth begetting warmth as seen on all the wonderful messages on the Legs for Lucas campaign.

While Lucas still has a long way to walking on his ‘new legs’, so far the people he’s made an impact on have secured R105 154 for him—and we think that’s a sight well worth sharing!
