After a round of blood tests left Zane Mbetshe feeling frustrated and alone, it wasn’t medicine that saved the day. It was a nurse who took the time to truly listen.
East London, South Africa (13 April 2026) – Facing a serious illness not only forces us to pause and appreciate life, but it also reminds us how much we lean on the people supporting us. Zane Mbetshe, who is currently receiving chemotherapy at East London’s Frere Provincial Hospital, found that vital support in the form of a compassionate nurse.
On Friday, she went in for blood tests before her next chemo session. However, Zane found herself feeling overwhelmed and frustrated after the procedure, as she had been informed of some changes caused by the effects of the chemo and would need to see the doctor.
It was at that very moment, this kind nurse, whom she didn’t even have the chance to ask for her name, saw Zane’s pain and frustration and stopped everything to comfort her.
“I don’t even know her name, but what I do know is that she carries such a special kind of heart,” Zane shares in a heartfelt post.
“Before going in [to see the doctor], I spoke to her. She was busy but she stopped everything and gave me her time like I was the only person that mattered in that moment. She explained everything so gently, so patiently, and with so much love. The way she speaks to patients, especially those fighting different kinds of cancer, is something you can feel deep in your heart.”
In a moment of overwhelming frustration and fear during an already difficult medical journey, this nurse met Zane where she was and responded with a kind of compassion that reassured her that not all hope was lost and that she was not alone.
Though Zane’s journey continues, she carries with her the strength of a nurse’s kindness that comforted her spirit. In her own heartwarming words:
“In a place filled with pain and uncertainty she brings comfort. In moments where fear tries to take over she brings peace. You can see it in her smile in her eyes in the way she shows up for people every single day. She may not know it, but today she held my heart together when I felt like breaking. May God continue to bless her beautiful soul.”
