Chad le Clos added a silver to South Africa’s medal tally by finishing second in the 200m free final.
South Africa has won its second medal of the Olympic Games in Rio after Chad le Clos won silver in the 200 metres freestyle a short while ago.
That follows Cameron van der Burgh winning silver in the 100m breaststroke yesterday morning.
Getting off to his customary fast start, Le Clos held off the entire field until the last few metres when he was pipped to the line by China’s Sun Yang.
Yang won in a time of 1:44:65 with Le Clos finishing in a new SA record of 1:45.20.
American Conor Dwyer took the bronze in 1:45:23.
“I always race hard and I always try my best, no matter what the event is, I will chase you down the last few metres,” Le Clos said ahead of the big clash.
Adding the freestyle medal to the gold and silver he won in London 2012, Le Clos joined South Africa’s most decorated Olympians which included Penny Heyns, Roland Schoeman, and Charles Winslow.
“It is a huge honour, it is a gold and two silvers now, tomorrow hopefully if we can get another gold that would be history. The best Olympian the continent has ever had so there is a lot riding tomorrow night and I will not take anyone for granted.”
South Africa is rooting for you Chad! Wishing you only good things…
