A family went from homelessness to a fresh start, thanks to the life-changing impact of a small act of kindness.

Johannesburg, South Africa (06 August 2024) – One Small Act of Kindness (OSAOK) was recently touched by the plight of a family facing unimaginable hardship when they approached them for food parcels.

The charity’s hearts broke when they learned that not only were their empty stomachs but also that of their little one, for whom they added nutritious meals to the hamper for his growing body.

But the family’s challenges didn’t end there. The weight of unpaid rent forced them into the unforgiving cold. With heavy hearts, OSAOK offered them shelter within the walls of a nearby charity school.

Every night and every morning they unpacked and packed up, and had to prepare a bed on the floor that was comfortable and warm.

Things look up for destitute family.

The little man joined the charity school, and shortly after that, the dad got a job! The mom assisted in the charity and still does.

After two months of sleeping on the floor, they recently enjoyed their first night in a comfortable bed after moving into the new place they could call home.

“This month, they were able to move and have a solid hand up! We collected bedding, towels, kitchen items and items for their home,” a post by the organisation shared.

While they still need a few things, they have a comfy place to make a home that is still close to the charity school and the dad’s new workplace.

Grateful for the helping hand in bettering their circumstances, the mother thanked Kelly-Ann Van Der Meer, the founder of One Small Act of Kindness and her team:

“As hard as it was to sleep on the floor and pack our lives up every day, it was so wholesome to get to know Kelly and OSAOK and the great work they do.

“Not only has she given us a hand-up, but a fresh start in life. We look at life differently, and we value things so much more. I mean, I’m a university graduate, but life happens to the best of us, and when we didn’t have anyone or anywhere to go, Kelly was the only person, a stranger to us then, who helped. We consider ourselves family now. What a beautiful heart and soul the front-runner of OSAOK has!!!”
