Education Officer Thembi Nomkala from the Cape of Good Hope SPCA has spent his entire lockdown helping families shelter their farm animals.
Cape Town, South Africa (01 June 2020) – Small-scale local farmers have had their fair share of struggles during the lockdown. Cape of Good Hope (CoGH) SPCA Education Officer Thembi Nomkala runs the “Compassion in Farming” project, and he has showcased so much compassion that our hearts are warming!
Officer Nomkala has worked tirelessly throughout the lockdown to support farmers. He has been visiting various small-scale farmers to ensure the animals are safe and have healthy living conditions. When he could lend a helping hand, he did so by using reclaimed wooden pallets to offer shelter and protection.
“In his continued efforts to ensure that all farm animals are offered safe, humane and healthy living conditions, Thembi has been distributing nets and pallets to local communities in need of support. The farmers taking part in the Compassion in Farming project were awarded these building items as part of their incentives for their hard work to date.”
With these important building supplies the farmers, guided by Thembi’s extensive knowledge, were able to build sufficient shelters which will keep their pigs protected in the harsh winter weather we are experiencing. Sawdust was also provided and will go a long way in providing these pigs with much-needed warmth as the temperatures drop.
The before and after photos show just how much hard work has gone into uplifting the welfare of this farmer’s animals.
Farm animals are so often forgotten and subject to immense cruelty- they too deserve to live in accordance with the 5 FREEDOMS:
• Freedom from thirst, hunger and malnutrition.
• Freedom to express normal behaviour.
• Freedom from discomfort.
• Freedom from fear and distress
• Freedom from pain, injury or disease.”
We often forget that the SPCA works to protect all animals, including commercial, domestic, endangered and wild ones! If there is an animal close to your heart, the SPCA has probably helped them out at some point. If you or your little one loves farm animals, you can reach out to your local SPCA and help them support the farm animals in your area.
