A life-sized statue of the late legend Desmond Tutu joins Nelson Mandela and other historic leaders at the ‘Long March to Freedom’ Exhibition!

Cape Town, South Africa (24 March, 2023) — A life-sized statue of the late legend Archbishop Desmond Tutu has joined the Long March to Freedom exhibition. Now, The Archbishop joins Nelson Mandela, Oliver Tambo and other South African champions of freedom on the immortalised journey.

Although Archbishop Tutu’s passing in 2021 saw a great loss for our country, it was also a testament to how many lives he inspired.

As President Cyril Ramaphosa said:

“Climate activists, LGBTQI+ groups, solidarity movements and community organisations are just some of those who have paid homage to a man who gave his life to the cause of freedom. A humble and brave human being who spoke up for the oppressed, the downtrodden and the suffering.”

The Arch’s purple light of philosophies and teachings span countries, continents and now time, thanks to his immortalised footing.

Aptly, ‘The Greatest Capetonian’ stands amongst other bronze heroes in Century City where the ‘Long March’ can be found.

The National Heritage Project installed the statue on Thursday, where The Arch can be seen wearing plum-painted garments, his famous smile, and an open embrace.

If you’ve ever visited the exhibition dedicated to the faces of democracy, you know that the experience is as emotional as it empowering. Still, if you haven’t made the trek, prepare to walk in the company of greatness and history in statue form.

Beyond the bronze, The Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy continues to keep Desmond Tutu’s spirit alive in other ways. The non-profit charity is focused on the development of future leaders, with multiple programmes and opportunities to make a difference at the ready, and you can get involved here.

As The Arch once said:

“Do your little bit of good where you are; it is those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world” — Desmond Tutu.
